Words from the Wise 43: Thomas Arnold

In 25th Anniversary, Articles, Careers, Words from the Wise

This is a series of posts that uses a quotation by a famous person from history to make a point about career management. Take a moment to reflect and see whether you can start using this wisdom as you start managing your career.

Thomas Arnold said:

“The difference between one man and another is not mere ability, it is energy.”

Proteus Career Management says:

“Does your CV, and do the achievements it contains, display a feeling of energy and enthusiasm as well as illustrating your abilities.”

The lesson? “Be enthusiastic.”

Dr Mike Warren says:

Depending on your personality, “enthusiasm” and “energy” can sometimes be quite difficult to express, whether written or spoken. As a former colleague used to say in a very droll yet matter of fact voice, “This is about as excited as I get!” It reminds me of a tale about three bricklayers that I heard years ago. They were each asked what they were doing. The first replied, as if to say, can’t you see, “I’m building a wall.” The second said, “Earning £9.50 an hour.” The eyes of the third lit up and he replied with passion, “I’m building a cathedral!”
