Words from the Wise 42: Jim Rohn
This is a series of posts that uses a quotation by a famous person from history to make a point about career management. Take a moment to reflect and see whether you can start using this wisdom as you start managing your career.
Jim Rohn said:
“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”
Proteus Career Management says:
“It’s best to stay proactive in managing your own career rather than just following the plan, if any, that your company or your line manger has in mind for you. Be the mater of your own destiny.”
The lesson? “Be self-reliant.”
Dr Mike Warren says:
When it comes to careers, many people, not all people certainly, but many people, are interested in you helping them with their plan rather than in helping you with yours. Most people’s plans are determined by what drives them: if your drivers are similar to theirs and if their plan fits in with yours that’s fine. However, you’ll be much better off if you design your own career plan, a plan that is consistent with your career drivers. This begs the question: do you know what your career drivers are? Do you know what keeps you engaged and happy at work?
